A Wanstrow man accused of assaulting his partner and threatening to kill her and a male friend while brandishing a knife has been released on bail.

Ross Alan Penny, aged 32, of Studley Lane, is charged with assaulting Bernadette Cox causing her actual bodily harm at Frome on September 18.

He was also alleged to have made threats to kills towards Miss Cox and Kevin Marsh during the same incident. He pleaded not guilty to all three charges at a previous hearing before South Somerset Magistrates.

The court heard that Miss Cox had suffered a fractured eye socket as a result of the defendant's alleged assault upon her.

After hearing details of the evidence the magistrates refused to accept jurisdiction for the case and ordered the defendant to be committed to stand trial at Taunton Crown Court.

When the defendant was brought before the court for a second time, magistrates agreed to an application by defence solicitor Jeffrey Bannister for him to be released on conditional bail.

He was ordered to return to the court at Yeovil on November 15 for committal proceedings.

In the meantime he must abide by strict bail conditions to reside at his home address and observe a daily curfew between 7pm and 6am while fitted with an electronic tag; must not go to Frome and must not contact the two alleged victims directly or indirectly.
