A little girl from Street has been on the receiving end of a letter from Balmoral Castle.

Kira Locke, seven, wrote to the Queen during her summer holidays after seeing her on television. Inspired by what she watched, she asked her mother, Holly, if she could write a letter to the head of state.

Kira's original letter stated, simply: "To the Queen – I saw you on the telly today and I thought you were brilliant. Yours sincerely Kira Locke age 7."

Kira, her sister Scarlett and her mother posted the letter the next day and then Mrs Locke said she thought no more about it.

But then an expensive-looking envelope dropped through the letterbox of the family's Street home.

When Kira arrived home from school, she opened the letter to discover a hand-written letter from one of the ladies in waiting to the Queen, and it reads: "Dear Kira, The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for your letter. Her Majesty was pleased to hear from you and, although unable to reply to you personally, The Queen much appreciated your kind message of support."

"Kira was quite pleased to get the letter, but honestly, she did act as though it was quite normal to get letters from the queen," said Mrs Locke. "We're going to frame the letter, though."
