Kicking is the key as Chew Valley end Matson's unbeaten run
Chew Valley RFC 1st XV 26
Matson RFC 1st XV 20
Accuracy with the boot proved the difference between the teams as Chew Valley edged out Matson to maintain their perfect start to the Western Counties North season.
Visiting winger Ryan Woodham missed two kickable penalties in the first half, while Chew Valley full-back Tom Bryan hit five out of six as the home scrum dominated.
Chew Valley’s lineout faltered at the start of the second half, allowing Matson back into the game as prop Neil Rose rumbled over from a lineout maul and right-winger Aaron Moorfield intercepted before racing three-quarters of the length of the pitch to touch down.
That brought the scores level at 15-15 but Chew Valley – led by skipper Tom Waddington, who was left with two shiners and a split lip after some off-the-ball shenanigans – regrouped.
Bryan slotted two more penalties as referee Craig Pocock lost patience with the tackler not releasing, then the introduction of Luke Sparkes Brown and Richard Light gave extra zip to the hosts.
And when tighthead prop Jonny Eves turned playmaker with a show and go, Bryan ran on to his pop pass to seal the win and end Matson’s unbeaten run.
However, there was still time for a further interception try from Woodham, which gave the visitors a bonus point and keeps them above Chew Valley on points difference.
The last kick of the game was missed by Matson full-back Vince Mourtian, who had earlier squandered a penalty and two other conversions.
