Just so much to do
HAVING lived in Somerset for 18 months when I first trained as a journalist some years ago now, I knew this part of the world was special.
But what has struck me particularly in these first few months on my return as editor here is just how much goes on in Mid-Somerset. Every week our reporters and photographers are out there covering events right across this beautiful patch, mingling with friendly faces, often beneath blue skies – and they call it work!
I've personally had the chance to sample everything from the Glastonbury Festival to the Wells Moat Boat Race – and enjoyed every minute of it. But of course because of the sheer number of events I can't make it to all of them – which means there'll always be something new to try out for years to come.
This weekend is no exception, with Wookey Hole Music Festival, Pilton Party and Show, Evercreech Show and Theale Flower Show as well as Music on the Pitch at Ashcott – to name but a few of the things going on.
What makes the events so special – apart from the fun and culture on offer – is that so many of them are organised by volunteers not looking for plaudits but simply doing their bit to help make their community a great place to live.
Most raise large sums of money for good causes – from a few much-needed pounds to many thousands. Sometimes it's easy to grumble about where you live and work – but with so much to do around here, moans and groans should be in short supply.
