Jos Buttler called up for second England Lions squad
After a string of impressive performances in Bangladesh earlier this month, Jos Buttler has retained his place in the England Lions squad for their second winter tour, with the team now moving on to Sri Lanka.
The Somerset CCC star was the Lions’ leading scorer in the five-match one-day series against Bangladesh A, smashing 161 runs at an average of 53.66 as the visitors lost the series 3-2.
Modest scores of 14 and 12 followed in the tied T20 series, with Buttler blaming the difficult sub-continent conditions for England’s failure to win more matches.
“The cricket in Bangladesh was a real challenge for the team,” said the 21-year-old.
“The conditions were really challenging, as we were facing around 40 out of the 50 overs of spin bowling.
“It’s fair to say we didn’t adjust and adapt well enough with the bat to post competitive enough scores.
“Personally, I feel like I batted reasonably well but didn’t go on to make bigger scores.”
Although slightly disappointed by his own form, the Wedmore wicketkeeper-batsman has still secured another call-up for the Lions’ trip to Sri Lanka, where he will hope more strong displays will land him a place in the national senior squad.
ECB national selector Geoff Miller said: “The Sri Lanka tour will provide a further opportunity for us to assess players in the 50-over format before we finalise selection for the senior team’s one-day series against Pakistan in UAE next month.”
Somerset team-mate Craig Kieswetter joins Buttler in the 15-man squad that will play five 50-over matches against Sri Lanka A, starting in Dambulla next Friday.
Buttler is then set to return to Bangladesh after the conclusion of the series, having been selected to play in the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League t20 competition, taking place between February 9 and 29.
He has been signed by Khulna Royal Bengal, with County Ground team-mates Peter Trego and Chris Gayle selected for other franchises in the event.
Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose said: “It will be very good experience for Jos Buttler to play t20 cricket at this level in Bangladesh against decent opposition.”
