Jazz ensemble with something to shout about
Aunt Tilly's Shouters come to Camerton Community Hall with four great musicians from the British jazz scene of the last 50 years tomorrow at 8pm.
Aunt Tilly's Shouters is an 'occasional' band conceived a few years ago by local jazz musician Roger Bonsall to play some jazz a little different from his usual New Orleans' style.
The personnel has evolved over time and includes some of the most experienced jazz musicians currently around.
A few years ago, the band was used to introduce 'on stage' Geoff Nichols and Des Bacon – two great west country based musicians who were part of the wider British jazz scene during the 'trad boom' of the 1950s and '60s.
It was a very successful meeting and the idea of adding a pianist could only mean one of the west country's finest jazz pianists Dave Collett.
Finally, a year ago, trombonist John Beecham came on board bringing with him his vast experience.
Although playing broadly in a 'traditional/mainstream' jazz style, with a strong early Ellington influence, the band often play tunes once popular but now ignored.
Geoff Nichols (trumpet, flugel horn and tenor horn), described by the late Humphrey Lyttleton as "one of the great British jazz trumpet players", is most well known as a founder member in 1949 of Bristol's internationally famous Avon Cities Jazz Band.
Geoff has always enjoyed playing jazz in a wide range of styles as well as being an accomplished writer and arranger.
Des Bacon (clarinet and alto sax) has also been a major figure on the British jazz scene since the mid-1950s when he joined the Mike Daniels Delta Jazz Band' as a pianist and later on clarinet and alto sax.
John Beecham (trombone) was a full-time jazz musician throughout his working life. He was part of The Mike Cotton Sound for many years before they merged with The Kinks.
Dave Collett (piano and vocals) is surely one of the 'senior statesmen' of the Bristol jazz scene with credentials ranging from Acker Bilk's 1950s Paramount Jazz Band to 40 years with The Avons as well as his own Band.
They will all be able to rely and relax on the experienced Mike Ducker (bass), Roger Wells (drums) and Roger Bonsall (guitar and banjo) for a swinging rhythm section.
