Jam and marmalade-making
Wells WI
The new year got off to an excellent start with the news that Wells WI has gained another 17 new members since October and many existing members have already renewed their subscriptions, bringing membership to 71.
The January meeting attracted nearly the entire membership, plus nine guests, to hear award-winning preserves specialist Vivien Lloyd share her expertise in jam and marmalade-making.
Vivien also gave an insightful account of the experience of self-publishing her book, First Preserves, which was recently declared book of the week in the Saturday Telegraph Magazine's Food News section.
The evening began with an engaging talk from Vivien's publisher, Robert Walster, from Wedmore-based graphic designers Big Blu Design.
Robert gave a step-by-step account of the process of self-publishing and how to go about independently writing, editing, producing and selling your own book.
Robert outlined everything involved, from the importance of style and design, to the complexities of indexing, how to set up your own publishing company, apply for an ISDN number, identify printers, manage distribution and maximise sales.
Robert's talk extended to the considerations of alternative book formats such as apps and eBooks, and how to identify and target appropriate overseas markets.
Following this, Vivien described her own experiences of self-publishing, including all the attendant pitfalls and triumphs, and the satisfaction of finally witnessing your own publication on the bookshop shelves.
After the refreshment break, Vivien offered a preserving question and answer and tasting session while she demonstrated her favourite marmalade recipe.
During the meeting, Wells WI members were invited to take part in the first round of voting for this year's National Federation of Women's Institutes resolutions.
There are six topics currently shortlisted, and WI members are voting this month to select the final two proposals which will go forward for general debate in May.
Wells WI's February meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 7, at 7.30pm at the usual venue of the Wells and Mendip Museum, where astronomer and author Dr Percy Seymour joins us to give a talk about the night sky.
During the second half of the meeting, members will be invited to gather outside on Cathedral Green to view the constellations first hand as Dr Seymour takes us through the basics of successful stargazing.
