Dozens of firefighters tackled a blaze which tore through the roof of a building and eventually caused its roof to collapse.

A total of six crews plus a water carrier and the incident support unit from Taunton were called to Abbey Road, Washford, near Williton, in Somerset just before 2am yesterday after the fire was discovered on the first floor and roof.

The firefighters took nearly three hours to bring the blaze under control and by 5am the roof had collapsed.

The incident was scaled down by 8am, although crews remained on scene to damp down hotspots. The cause is under investigation.
