Wells Journal

Following the sad loss of our independent councillor, John Mitchell, there will now be a by-election in the St Cuthbert's ward of Wells City Council.

I invite each of the candidates to publicly state their views on Mendip District Council's plan to increase the Wells population by over one third within 15 years, with the consequent increase in traffic congestion and intolerable pressure on our health services, schools, sewerage systems and parking.

The 2011 Census data shows that St Cuthbert's ward already has the highest density of population per hectare in Wells at 24.5 compared with less than 17 in the two other wards.

The census also shows that the population of the St Cuthbert's ward was just over 4,300 in 2011 but Mendip's local plan would see that figure rise to about 6,800 within 15 years. Mendip's plan is to build over 600 houses in the ward including 350 on a green field site (currently in the St Cuthbert (Out) parish) and 61 on the Wells Rugby Club pitches.
