Initiative hopes to inspire community to take action
THERE are lots of ways to get up and get going during Yeovil’s green active-lifestyle week, Go Yeovil.
More details have been announced for the week-long initiative in June, which is raising funds for two local organisations, St Margaret’s Hospice in Yeovil and Yeovil Women’s Hospital.
The aim is to get everyone in the community joining together to celebrate healthy lifestyles and to get the week off to a flying start there will be a whole range of events on Sunday, June 13.
Everyone is invited to strap on their running shoes for the Ninesprings 9k and 4.5k, and for the children a 2k fun run. The aim is to get at least 1,000 people taking part in the event organised by Yeovil Town Road Running Club.
In the town centre on the same day, the waiters’ race promises high jinx and big laughs. In an event organised by town centre manager Ian Budd, teams of four from catering businesses across the town will be vying with each other in an obstacle race with a difference.
Teams will be kitted out in full fancy dress and prizes will be awarded to the fastest, the best dressed and the team which collects the most sponsorship.
For anyone who wants to get active in a musical way, there will be a chance to take part in the Hotsteppers danceathon at Goldenstones on Sunday.
The four-hour session will see participants try their hands and feet at dancercise, street dance, commercial and musical theatre jazz.
Also that day, for the able-bodied and disabled alike, there will be a wheelchair mobility challenge, organised by South Somerset Disability Forum and Yeovil Shopmobility from 10am to 3pm at Glovers Walk.
Activities will continue throughout the week, which runs until Saturday, June 19. There will be a chance to take part in the Blackburn Fitness Trail with countryside ranger and fitness enthusiast Rachael Lappage, or have a go on static bikes at the Quedam Shopping Centre.
In addition Yeovil Scouts will be coming together for their own Go Yeovil! challenge, as will staff, students and customers at Yeovil College, beauty saloon New Image, Goldenstones leisure centre, Agusta Westland, South Somerset District Council, Yeovil Hospital and many more.
But if none of this appeals or if you simply do not have the time, there is still a way to join in by doing exactly what you always do for the week-long Pedometer Challenge.
The Healthy Living Challenge for a fit person is 10,000 steps a day. During Go Yeovil! week every step you take will go towards building a big green footprint for Yeovil, which organisers hope will send out a message about the town’s climate-friendly credentials.
To take part and make every step you take count, all you need to do is pledge £3 and sign up to the Pedometer Challenge.
The Go Yeovil! Pedometer pledge will be promoted in a number of outlets around the town from Saturday, May 1, and participants will be issued with a small device that records how many steps they take.
Businesses wishing to get involved can join the Pedometer challenge now online.
