In your article on the distribution of the New Homes Bonus, Mendip's unnamed spokesperson states that they require the bulk of funding to maintain services in the district.

The Communities and Local Government website makes clear that these funds are "to ensure that the economic benefits of growth are returned to the local authorities and communities where that growth takes place".

Frome is taking most of the new homes growth (about 25 per cent planned) and Nick White's case that Frome is not planned to receive a reasonable share of the pot is not answered.

History is not on our side – for example, only seven per cent of the cleaning budget was spent on Frome last year although we have 22 per cent of current housing, as is painfully obvious on the streets of our town.

But, perhaps naively, I take heart from another statement from the top: "Parish and town councils are encouraged to negotiate with local authorities to ensure that the benefits of growth are reaped by the communities themselves".

They give the example of Wychavon where up to 40 per cent of the funding is spent by the community where the growth is taking place.

Frome's Mendip and town councillors will need all the support we can get to ensure that our currently pathetic agreed allocation of one per cent is increased.

“The alleged actions of Mendips and other councils should be regarded as municipal benefits fraud”
