With reference to the letter, "Reconsider poor design of junction", published on January 26.

As a governor of Norton Hill School, I am in full sympathy with Jeremy Gibson's letter about the junction of Charlton Road and Silver Street in Midsomer Norton.

I too have narrowly avoided a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.

The school raised its concerns regarding the scheme at design stage, but Bath and North East Somerset Council went ahead without taking into account the representations we made.

As a frequent user of the junction, I have not once seen a cyclist from the school use the cycle path. It appears to be used, obviously at some risk, by pedestrians only.

The school's policy remains to encourage pupils and staff to use sustainable means of transport in their journeys to and from school, but finds it difficult to recommend the use of the Charlton Road extension on safety grounds.

B&NES highways designers should revisit the scheme and make the changes necessary to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.
