The owners of an Ilminster business which suffered massive flood damage say they would have considered shutting up shop were it not for the support received from the community.

Eddie Donnelly and Jo Tippett only started up E and S Computers on Ditton Street two weeks ago, but were faced with the prospect of calling it a day entirely when rising floodwater overcame their sandbags on Saturday and got into the store.

Mr Donnelly said: "I was welded to the spot watching the water coming over the sandbags and thinking 'this can't be happening'. "Jo was running around trying to get our customers' laptops on to the desks and out of harm's way before the water got in. Luckily nothing was damaged.

"I was worried throughout the day as I saw the water gradually rise.

It came up on to the path outside. It crept further and further until it got to the sandbags.

It felt like it was never going to stop and then it got higher. We were paddling in it on Saturday night."

Despite their ordeal, Mr Donnelly said they did not miss even a day's worth of trading, due to the help they received from their neighbours.

He said: "The chap who has just opened up a hardware shop in town let us borrow his washer vacuum and many other people chipped in by helping or offering us their support.

"One lady walked up to Jo when she was standing at the door and put £10 in her hand and walked off again. We were so touched by the community.

"If it had not been for everyone doing what they did, we would not have been open for another week and I would be standing here after only two weeks thinking what's the point now?"
