Heavy rain could turn to icy stretches in Somerset over the weekend, prompting the Met Office to issue yellow weather warnings.

A yellow warning of ice has been issued between 9pm on Thursday and midday on Friday. A yellow warning of snow will come into force at 3am on Sunday, and remain in place until midnight on Monday.

The warnings urge the public to be aware of ice and snow, and to be braced for potential localised travel disruption. Take extra care when walking, cycling or driving in affected areas, the Met Office says.

Heavy downpours are forecast across Somerset over the coming days.

The Met Office predicts heavy rain in Taunton this evening, and expects showers until the early hours of Friday.

An overcast but largely dry day should follow, but further heavy showers are expected by Friday evening and are set to continue overnight.

Light rain is forecast throughout Saturday afternoon and evening, but temperatures could feel as high as 6C in parts of Somerset.

Light showers will turn to heavy downpours by around midnight on Saturday, the Met Office says, and rain will continue to fall in varying degrees until around 9am on Sunday.

A cloudy day with sunny intervals should follow, however.

It will feel considerably colder on Sunday night, around -3C in parts of Somerset, and a light flurry of snow is forecast in Frome in the early hours of Monday.

Temperatures are unlikely to rise by more than 1C on Monday, and the forecast is cloudy with light showers during the afternoon.
