Two fire engines from Wellington and a water carrier from Bridgwater were first on the scene, with another two crews from Taunton also mobilised.
Firefighters spent the next 90 minutes tackling the blaze, which was extinguished shortly after 6.30am.
There were no injuries, but the entry slip road from the A38 Wellington road onto the M5 remained closed during rush hour.
Two lanes of the motorway also remained closed while recovery work was carried out. One was reopened mid-morning.
The slip road and other motorway lane were reopened shortly before 3pm this afternoon.
