Hopes of rescuing landmark still high
A SOMERTON landmark could still be rescued despite a Lottery funding blow – its supporters said this week.
The Somerton Historic Building Preservation Trust needs to raise at least £181,000 to bring the vacant Old Town Hall in Market Place into public ownership.
It hopes to restore the building and bring it up-to-date for possible use as an art gallery.
Despite the rejection of a recent application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project's supporters remain optimistic.
Michael Fraser-Hopewell (pictured) acting trust chairman said he hoped the Heritage Lottery Fund would provide 75 per cent of the £682,000 needed to buy and upgrade the hall.
He said: "Our application to the Lottery fund was unsuccessful, which was a disappointment. But it has encouraged us to submit a second application so that is positive, we just need to fine tune our application."
