A village meeting will be held tonight to try and find a way to save Binegar School, which is under threat a year after it was joined with neighbouring Oakhill School.

The school has fewer than 30 children on its roll and, together with up to 15 other schools in the same position in Somerset, it is losing guaranteed funding for two teachers from April next year.

A decision to cut funding to small schools with small numbers of pupil was made by Somerset County Council in 2009.

This left school governors with the difficult decision of what to do after the drop in funds at the end of the 2011 school year.

Somerset's executive board member for children's services, Cllr John Osman has managed to secure a small amount of extra funding in order to try and keep the schools running – but under a new format.

Governors of the federated Oakhill and Binegar Schools met last week to discuss the proposals and agreed in principle that they want to take Binegar School forward to continue raising standards and provide a good education for village children.

Head teacher Bethan Foister said: "How this new budget covers the proposed staffing will have to be looked at closely with the finance adviser from the local authority, so myself and other governors will be working on this through the summer holidays, with a view to coming back to the full governing body with proposals in September."

Binegar Parish Council has joined the campaign to secure a future for the school and is holding a village meeting tonight, Thursday at the village's memorial hall at 8.30pm to discuss what support can be gathered.

Deanne Smith, the chairman of governors, said: "The governors' priority has always been providing the best education possible for the children in the best environment but in order to sustain the school we need higher pupil numbers. These will only be attracted to a school with a sustainable future and for this we need adequate funding and support."
