Hey Diddle Diddle Old Vic Studio 9/10
DIRECTOR Miranda Cromwell, Elizabeth Westcott, and designer Madeleine Girling aimed their production at a very young audience, somewhere between three to six, and hit the mark firmly in the Bull's Eye. This romp through some of the best known and best loved nursery rhymes captured their audience from the word go and never lost them for a moment. In an era when concentration levels are becoming shorter and shorter that is no mean feat in its own right.
They did this not only through the high standard of the work on offer ], but also by the most skilful ways of continually involving the young visitors in the action. Unlike the usual pantomime format which is continually demanding a response from the audience, Owen Ridley, Isabelle Cressy, and Alice Barclay made their invitations to join in the action so inviting that they never had to resort to pleading or bullying to gain a wholehearted response.
Using the flimsiest of excuses, three children escaping from their bedrooms to find adventure via a magic box in the cellar, these three multi talented performers in music, dance and dialogue took their audience down a delightful ride through Nursery Land world.
The informal semi-round setting places the young audience, and their older companions, who appeared to enjoy the experience as much as their wards, right at the heat of the action. Just under an hour long this show is an ideal introduction to the theatre, and the innocent world of the nursery rhyme.
