Heroic effort by bird boxes maker
More than £700 has been handed over to Help for Heroes thanks to a retired swimming instructor and his passion for wild birds.
For a number of years Dennis Barter, 80, of Midsomer Norton, has spent his spare time building bird boxes which he sells through classified adverts of the Somerset Guardian to raise money for charity.
The latest donation has taken his total to more than £3,500 which has helped a variety of local and national charities over the past few years.
Mr Barter, who spent more than 30 years teaching people to swim at Norton Radstock Swimming Club, has made a new batch of blue tit boxes from donated wood just in time for the bird nesting season.

Over the coming months Mr Barter will be turning his attentions to raising cash for Dorothy House Hospice.
