Heritage mine celebrates the power of steam
The innovative genius of Cornwall's greatest engineer will be the subject of a series of science-based events at East Pool Mine this summer.
Starting tomorrow, the National Trust site between Redruth and Camborne is offering four "Trevithick Tuesdays" throughout August.
East Pool Mine is at the heart of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, with two great beam engines originally powered by high-pressure steam boilers introduced by Camborne inventor Richard Trevithick.
Visitor services officer Anita Pryor said: "Preserved in towering engine houses, these industrial gems now stand partially hidden in an urban landscape as a reminder of Cornwall's days as a world-famous centre of industry, engineering and innovation.

"The Trevithick Tuesdays activities have been chosen to help visitors understand the basic principles that lie behind the power of steam in a simple kitchen sink way. We will be challenging families to build the tallest towers and join in the 'great egg drop'. There will be explosive experiments and a chance to build simple water pumps. The experiments and challenges have been chosen to help visitors of all ages understand the basic principles that lie behind the technologies that were used on this site."
Trevithick Tuesdays begin tomorrow and continue on August 13, 20 and 27. Normal admission prices apply but there are no extra costs for the activities.
