Hayman shines but club is unable to avoid drop
Mendip Athletics Club
After the elation of winning promotion to the National Young Athletes League Premiership, MAC came down to earth with a bump at the final South West League match of the season.
With the league catering for the senior age groups as well as the juniors, MAC were unable to find enough to prevent relegation from Division One, along with Exeter Harriers, who had finished runners-up behind Mendip in Division Two last year.
Once again Lauren Hayman was the star of the U13 girls, winning the 100m and B long jump and placing third in the 200m, with Alice Watkins gaining three third places.
Aoife Thorogood dominated the U15 girls' 1,500m, with Alice Grosjean doing likewise in the shot, while Charlotte Scrivens and Ruby Kelly contributed some useful second places.
Maya Robinson was kept busy, contesting three events and the relay. Sara Geary provided a rare club win in the senior ladies' section, taking the long jump event.
Dan Barker (javelin), Luke Dowding (B javelin) and Luke Timmins (B 200m) provided the best of the U15 boys, with other good performances from Dan Robinson, Josh Timmins and Cameron Davidson.
U17 Kurtis Gibson was just adrift of his best in finishing second in the 800m, while Matt Norton threw well for second in the hammer and fourth in the discus.
Sam Norris gained some useful points with a best of second in the B discus.
With most of the U13 boys missing the fixture, Mark Bailey once again showed great promise in the 800m event.
MAC have started their winter training programme, which involves a choice of seven different sessions through the week for some of the older club members.
Due to the large numbers involved, MAC are recruiting through to the middle of October for their main Thursday evening session at Millfield, with the books then being closed until next Easter.
All interested juniors (from the age of nine upwards) can come along for the next two weeks for a "come and try it" taster.
MAC have also started endurance training on a Monday, at Wells Blue School from 6pm until 7pm. Meet at the Kenyon Road end of the playing fields.
Thursday evening Sportshall training has also started at the Blue School, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
