Harry Fry grabs a second place with Subtle Sovereign on debut at Wincanton
Fledgling trainer Harry Fry so nearly had a dream start to his career when Subtle Sovereign finished second to Gas Line Boy at Wincanton.
Fry, who was the main man at Paul Nicholls’ satellite yard and was credited with masterminding champion hurdler Rock On Ruby last season, will be very pleased with the performance of the 20-1 shot.
Having looked a little outpaced half a mile out they grey stayed on strongly, albeit seven lengths behind the 8-1 winner, trained by Philip Hobbs and ridden by Richard Johnson for the Mick Fitzgerald Racing Club.
Johnson told Racing UK: “We didn’t really know much about him and he was very green but he’s got an engine.

“He’d won an Irish point-to-point and you never know how good that form is.”
Former Grand National-winning jockey Fitzgerald said: “You can’t get better than that. It’s all about fun and what better way than having a winner.”
