Gym manager Scott Hurley was at the scene quickly.
He said he thought the alarm must have caused the intruders to flee.
"If we had not had an alarm it could have been much worse," he said.
"They must have just dashed in and taken what they could before fleeing."
The thieves grabbed a few tubs of protein shake mix and also snatched charity boxes from the front counter.
Scott and his staff and customers had been busy collecting donations for the Air Ambulance, Macmillan and a children's charity.
"It's pretty gutting they took those," he said.
Police are studying CCTV footage and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 101. Now Scott and his staff are looking forward to the opening of their new premises in the town when they move the gym to the top floor of the Academy in the town centre on November 12.
