Groundsmen go forth in award honours
THE groundsmen at Somerton Playing Fields have been presented with an award for the fourth year in a row.
Andy Billing and his assistant Wayne Foote were awarded Bronze in the Somerset Playing Field Association awards.
The award was presented last month to the pair who keep the eight sports pitches maintained all year round.
Their hard work has enabled around 450 football and rugby matches to be played in the past year.
Somerton Town Council has thanked the two men, who have received similar awards for the past four years.
Town councillor Tony Jotcham said: "The judges identified that the groundsmen had maintained the recreation ground to a high standard and said that given the increased number of entries and improving standard it makes their achievement more impressive.
"Throughout the season in varying weather conditions they can be seen at the crack of dawn steadfastly preparing pitches in readiness for the day ahead.
"Nothing is ever too much trouble."
