Green light for teen's striking logo design
IT IS fast becoming a familiar sight to shoppers and Western Gazette readers.
But what makes the Go Yeovil! logo even more impressive is its designer is only 16.

GO Yeovil! – the town’s first green active lifestyle campaign – is just five weeks away and venues across the town have been encouraging people to sign up to the seven-day pedometer challenge by pledging £3 in return for a free step counter and a pedometer step count form.
The eye-catching logo promoting the initiative, which runs from Saturday, June 13 to Saturday, June 19, was created by first year Yeovil College student Stephen Flagg.
Stephen’s design, inspired in part by Yeovil Town FC colours and based on a set of traffic lights, was chosen from six other entries to represent the campaign.
Winning the competition was a major boost for the BND graphic design diploma student, who hopes to continue his studies at university.
The Templecombe youngster said: “The principal came up to our lesson and said there was an event in June he wanted us to design a logo for. We had two to three weeks to get some ideas together.
“I was really happy seeing it in the paper. I am going to include it as part of my portfolio.”
Mike King of Aztec Media helped develop the design and was responsible for setting up GO Yeovil!’s website, alongside designer Oliver Cunningham.
He said: “Stephen’s design stood out the most. It was based on traffic light colours, to signify ‘Get ready, get set, go.’
“We then brought him down for a couple of hours and re-stylised it as if he was a customer. We are skilled at taking the customers’ concept to the next level. Without moving it away from his concept, we were able to turn it around to a professional identity.”
Staff and students at the college are now gearing up to walk the length of the Great Wall of China as part of GO Yeovil!’s pedometer challenge. Every step on the challenge will count towards forming Yeovil’s Big Green Footstep.
Students and staff will also take part in the Ninesprings 9km run on June 13, and host a World Cup 5-a-side competition on June 18. And principal James Hampton will join staff and pupils in their attempt to row the length of the River Yeo in 12 hours.
Funds from all GO Yeovil! events will go towards St Margaret’s Hospice and Yeovil Women’s Hospital.
Mr Hampton said: “We want to raise as much money as we can for charity, and show what staff and young people at the college can do in terms of supporting the town.
“We also want to help staff and students understand how to get a little bit fitter.”
