A chill wind and pouring rain failed to dampen the spirits of supporters who gathered in Shepton Mallet's town centre on Friday for the official launch of the presence of several of the town's High Street businesses online.

District councillors Bente Height and Jeannette Marsh officially cut the ribbon to declare the doors open for the town's businesses who have opted for an online presence 24/7 with the MyHigh.St shopping opportunity.

MyHigh is the brainchild of co-founder Loaye Agabani, who runs a toy shop in Wells High Street.

Mrs Height said: "We need positive thinking for our town centre and our town. If we don't do something to back and help the independent traders then all will be lost."

Mrs Marsh added: "The launch of MyHigh in Shepton is very positive for the town. It is a real step forward."

The launch of MyHigh in Shepton, which gives online access to customers round the clock, comes in the wake of a recent survey which shows High Street independent shops could be in for a bumpy festive season. Research highlights although 56 per cent of people in the South West claim to have visited their high street in the past week, 57 per cent now shop less on the high street than they did five years ago.

Nearly a third plan to spend less money in their own town centre in the next few months, while a fifth will spend more online in the same period.

Mr Agabani said: "People really do want to visit their local shops, but also want the convenience of internet shopping. Every time you shop with MyHigh.St you do your bit to help independent shops and our high streets."
