Cheddar-based Somerset Freestyle Kickboxing Club held a black belt grading event recently, with junior and senior students examined under the watchful eye of instructor Steve Selway 5th Dan.

SFK has a reputation for hosting gradings that are not for the faint-hearted. However, all the students arrived physically and mentally prepared for the stiff challenge that lay ahead.

Pupils had to perform and display the criteria required for the grading, which included extreme fitness tests, floor and mid-air kicking techniques, shadow boxing, rounds of pad work, set sparring, free sparring and two-against-one sparring.

Each grading lasted more than six-and-a-half hours. All the students were physically and mentally exhausted by the end but had displayed the techniques, fitness, courage and mental strength to pass.

Instructor Selway was extremely proud and pleased with the performances and delighted all their hard work and preparation had paid off.

Junior students Max Selway, Liam Holford, Oliver Rutter, Charlotte Smith and Maddy Bawden all became 1st Dans.

Of the adults, Tom Pope and Jamie Waugh were made 1st Dans, Chris Griffin, Gemma Baker, Louis Pointer Jones and Sam Honeywill became 2nd Dans, and Mike Carthy and Colin Sturdy were promoted to 3rd Dans.

Anyone interested in learning kickboxing can attend the club's classes on Mondays and Fridays at its Redcliffe Street base. Juniors train from 6pm, with adults in action at 7.30pm.
