Yeovil Town midfielder Ryan Mason still has a hunger for goals, despite playing in a variety of roles for the Glovers this season.

The Tottenham Hotspur loanee has become one of the first names on manager Terry Skiverton’s team sheet since switching in the summer.

Along with Spurs colleagues Steven Caulker and Jon Obika, Mason will remain at Huish Park until the end of the campaign.

He has been deployed predominantly as an attacking midfielder, behind two strikers, but has also found himself on the right wing.

All part of the learning curve

Mason said he was just glad to be able to contribute, but targeted improved perform-and more goals to help Yeovil climb Coca-Cola League One.

Mason said: “My position is off the strikers, but obviously I am happy to help the team wherever the gaffer wants me to play.

“Playing wide is not something I have done before, so it is all part of a learning curve, and I am glad to be getting the experience.

“It is a tough league but I have found it OK, to be honest. Hopefully I can kick on and my performances can get better towards the end of the season.

“I have played in a lot of positions, it has been a good experience and hopefully I can kick on and start scoring some goals, which I have not been doing lately.”

Mason arrived at Huish Park with a reputation as a goal-scoring midfielder for Spurs’ academy team. His creative influence has made him a favourite with the Yeovil fans, as he has set up four of the Glovers’ goals, as well as playing a key role in many attacking moves.

Mason is second behind Obika in Yeovil’s scoring charts, having netted on four occasions.

However, having scored 29 times in 31 games for Spurs Under-18s last season, Mason has high expectations.

Tomorrow the Glovers play just their second game of 2010, when they entertain Exeter City. Mason said the squad had already forgotten about their dismal 2-0 defeat at Leyton Orient on Tuesday.

“It was good for everybody to get fresh and have a few weeks off, but it is a bit disappointing not to have come back with a win on Tuesday night,” he said.

“At home we are a very good side and I think we could beat anyone. We have just got to find a formula to work away from home and I am sure we will climb up the table.

“We had Wednesday off, so everybody could relax and recover, and Thursday was just back to normal.

“We have put the Leyton Orient game out of the way. It has happened now so there is no point beating ourselves up about it. We have got a big game on Saturday, so we need to concentrate on that.”

Mason scored the equaliser in Yeovil’s 1-1 draw with the Grecians in Exeter and the teenager said the club learnt plenty from that encounter.

“It will be a tough game,” he said. “If we put in a performance like we have shown at home we will get the three points.”
