Ghostbusters join family for night in Wookey Hole Caves
There were plenty of spookey goings-on in Somerset on Halloween but one family had more to fear than most.
The Hood family, Deanne, Mark and their twin nine-year-old sons, Aaron and Connor, from Shepton Mallet, spent the most haunted night of the year deep inside Wookey Hole Caves – home to witches, ghouls and ghosts.
They were guided through the caves from 11pm on Halloween with professional ghosthunting team Barri Ghai and Ian Wilce, tracking paranormal activity in the Caves.
The ghosthunters conducted “vigils” within each of the chambers and monitored response using a range of high tech equipment including motion detectors, night vision cameras EMF detectors and thermometers. Activity noted by the team included distant laughter, heavy sighs, low rumblings, extreme temperature changes and lights flashing on and off.

Mark said: “It was damp and very, very cold but an absolutely unforgettable night. We’ll be able to dine out on this experience for the rest of our lives.”
Before undertaking the challenge, both Deanne and Mark were slightly sceptical about the existence of spirits. After, Deanne said: “I’m sure that the acoustics of the caves can play a lot of tricks but I’m certainly more convinced than I was before I went in. In fact, there were some moments when I was really, really scared.”
The challenge for the spooky sleepover was set by Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar, a cheese matured in the Cave and the Hood Family were chosen to take it up from several entries Mark and Connor stayed the course, sleeping on camp beds outside the cheese cave for the full term though Deanne and Aaron sensibly opted to cry off at 2am in favour of a warm bed.
