People living in the Mendips were this afternoon wondering why the onset of snowfall brought with it a foul smell.

It transpired the two were not linked.

The source of the smell is a factory in France which started leaking the gas mercaptan yesterday and strong winds have conveyed it to much of the South of England.

"I was worried it might be our boiler playing up" said one resident, "it's not want you want when it's snowing hard outside and engineers might tell you to shut it down."

Some people have claimed to have suffered nausea and headaches as a result even though the substance is said to be harmless.

The factory is in Rouen and is a French subsidiary of  Lubrizol, an American chemicals manufacturer.

Police in Rouen have received more than 10,000 complaints from nearby residents.

The firm is trying to stop the leak but the cause is currently unknown.

Experts are advising that doors and windows are kept closed as a precaution.
