Embarrassed manager Gary Johnson has warned it will take considerable work to return Yeovil Town to winning ways after accusing his squad of having “mental deficiencies”.

The Glovers missed yet another chance to turn up the heat on npower League One’s top six when they capitulated to a 3-1 defeat to Carlisle United.

With the Huish Park outfit’s next game eight days away in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Wycombe Wanderers, Johnson said the team would have no rest before the regional quarter final.

He said: “It’s going to be busy for the lads. I’m embarrassed by that performance. You could say we had chances, but it was nothing to do with whether we had chances or not, it was more to do with us not being able to put in the effort needed.

“That is probably the most embarrassed I’ve been for many a year, to be honest, and that’s how I felt. I’ve got to make sure I’m putting in the time and the effort to turn it around otherwise I’m not doing the job myself because that was nowhere near the standard.”

Admitting frustration in his team’s inconsistencies, Johnson added: “Every time we get that chance to step into the higher reaches of the league again we seem to fail.

“I know certain players have got mental deficiencies in their toughness. Some of them it’s in their performance, some of them it’s in their personalities.

“Some of them it’s because they’re just totally inexperienced. But we have got to keep dragging them through, pushing and shoving them and doing whatever we have to do to keep us competing as much as we can.

“Those sorts of personalities get you dragged back down into the relegation fight.”
