Gary Anderson was unable to build on an early lead as he was beaten 7-4 by Raymond van Barneveld in the opening night of the 2013 McCoy's Premier League Darts in Belfast last night.

Scotsman Anderson, who lives at Burnham-on-Sea, opened up early 2-0 and 3-1 advantages but was unable to stay in front against the five-time world champion.

Anderson hit double 18 to take out 106 to win the fourth leg, but the Dutchman returned fire with five successive leg wins to go 6-3 up.

Van Barneveld came within a double five of making it 7-3, but Anderson reduced the deficit on double two.

It only delayed the inevitable, though, and after Anderson missed tops, Barney hit double 16 for the win.

"I'm very pleased with that," said van Barneveld. "My scoring was great but I have to sharpen up on my finishing,

"Other players may have punished me tonight so I know I'll have some work to do on the practice board, but I believe in myself and I know I can win this tournament.

"The crowd were great and I'm looking forward to Aberdeen next week too because I always get a good reception in Scotland too."

Other opening night winners were Robert Thornton over Andy Hamilton, James Wade over Wes Newton and Simon Whitlock over Adrian Lewis.

In the night's final match, world champion Phil Taylor was held to a 6-6 draw by Michael van Gerwen.
