This year's Mini Olympics held at Millfield, in Street, saw 280 children from 16 schools across mid-Somerset take part.

With the forecast thunderstorms by-passing the area, the weather stayed warm and dry with a light breeze – ideal conditions for some fast times. After the opening parade lap, where each school represented a different country, the children got stuck into the competition.

Three records were broken in the field, with Masia Horwood (Hugh Sexey) throwing the upper girls' turbo javelin 18.97m, Cameron Allen (St Aldhelm's) throwing the lower boys' ball 42.63m and Thomas Booth (Chewton Mendip) clearing 1.38m in the upper boys' high jump.

And while Jamaica may have Usain Bolt, St Aldhelm's had Harry Warwick in the lower boys' 60m sprint, who tore 0.2 seconds off the previous record, crossing the line in 9.1 seconds.

Harry went on to help St Aldhelm's to a new 4x60m shuttle relay record with 40.8 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Amy Barlow (Elmhurst) came close to the lower girls' 600m record with 2.07.7, while Mark Bailey (Croscombe) failed to capitalise on a great first 600m and just missed Nathan Young's upper boys' 800m record, finishing with 2.32.

Lazara Hayes (Elmhurst) just missed the lower girls' hurdles record with a time of 10.6 seconds, while classmate Joe Grant also missed the boys' record by a 10th with 10.0 seconds.

While not quite matching the record, Hugh Sexey's upper girls' relay team impressed with a 62.5 second clocking, with Wells Central's 63.3 in second place also beating all the boys' teams.

On the field, Ellie Allen (Wells Central) enjoyed a big winning margin in the upper girls' long jump with 3.76m, with Tom Booth (Chewton Mendip) close to the upper boys' record with 4.11m.

Caitlin Chubb, also of Chewton Mendip, just missed out on breaking the upper girls' high jump record with a 1.24m clearance.

Overall team results: 1 Elmhurst 449.5, 2 Wells Central 402.5, 3 St Paul's 397.5, 4 Oakhill 370, 5 St Aldhelm's 353.5, 6 Chewton Mendip 346.5, 7 Stoberry Park 341, 8 Upton Noble 340.5, 9 Horrington 334.5, 10 Croscombe 286.5, 11 West Pennard 286, 12 Evercreech 271, 13 Hugh Sexey (Upper School Only) 248.5, 14 St Lawrence's 190.5, 15 Selwood (Upper School Only) 173.5, 16 Wookey 166.5.

The organisers would like to thank all the helpers from the schools, Mendip Athletics Club and Mendip District Council for their continued financial and organisational support.
