Marathon runner and fundraiser Jim Plunkett-Cole has been saved a special race number for this year's Hemington 10k.

He and Neil Taylor, along with collie dog Alfredo, are running at least 10k every day in 2013 to raise money for a number of different charities.

And to mark his efforts, the organisers of the Hemington 10k and fun run, which takes place on Sunday, March 24, have saved race number 365 for the 44-year-old from Frome Running Club.

"Six months ago I had the crazy idea of running 10k every day for a year, just to see if it could be done," said Plunkett-Cole, who lives round the corner from Hemington School, which along with Hornbeams Pre-School, receives the proceeds from the race.

"I'm a pretty lazy person, actually, and to a lazy guy like me, not having a choice about doing something acts as motivation.

"And then someone suggested doing it for charity, and the project just snowballed. It's a big challenge, because none of us can get injured or poorly all year.

"The way we feel now is that one of us would have to lose a leg for us not to finish. Already we've learned so much.

"If anyone's interested in supporting or helping us, the best thing they can do at the moment is to like us on Facebook, as we're trying to raise awareness of the project. Please search for 10Kx365."

Anna Mercer, chair of the Hemington Friends Association, hopes that the race, being held for the fourth time, will raise £1,000 for school funds.

"We think what Jim is doing is brilliant, so we saved race number 365 for him to fit his challenge, and of course we've given him his place in the run for free," she said.

"Please come and join us on the day either by running in one of the races, cheering the runners on and having a nice cuppa and piece of cake, or we're always looking for volunteers to help on the day."

Race organiser Jo Merrick added: "I've run around these lanes for the last 15 years or so. Now that I have three children at Hemington Primary School it is great to be able to share some of my favourite routes with everybody else, while raising money for the school and pre-school.

"The Hardington Vale is a hidden gem, off the beaten track, and we've put together a really friendly run for seasoned runners and beginners alike."

There are several races on the day, with 500m and 1km runs fun runs for children and adults, as well as a 3.8km cross-country route and the 10k itself.
