Fun run in the sun
The sunshine during the bank holiday weekend brought out runners in force for the Wells Fun Run.
More than 800 runners entered the four races, one of which was declared full before the day by the race organisers, Wells City Harriers.
The junior 1km race quickly followed suit on the morning of the race.
The scenic course offered outstanding views of the cathedral, and the staggered start times meant that parents running in the 10km race could support children in the 1km event or accompany those in the race for the very youngest children.
This race, which included three-year-old competitors, was about 500m long.
The longest race, at 10km, was completed by a 78-year-old.
The Mayor of Wells, Cllr Christina Borastero, started the races and presented the prizes in the town hall afterwards.
More than 40 trophies, shields and gift vouchers were awarded.
The Corporate Team Shield, sponsored by the Wells Journal, was won by the team from Inshape Gym for Ladies, which fielded a staggering 53 runners, beating the previous record (set by them last year) by more than 20.
"The buzz and lively atmosphere at the event made it more than just a race – it really was a fun run", said Alison Deamer, who volunteered to help on the day.
The community feel of the event extended to businesses in the area, with both the city's Ask restaurant and the Crown Hotel supplying power for the PA system.
The course records for the 10km race remained intact, with men's winnerAlistair Lindsay, of Wells City Harriers, and ladies' winner, Great Britain international marathon runner Holly Rush, battling heat and injury to reach the finishing line first in the longest races, clocking times of 35.06 minutes and 36.13 minutes respectively.
Holly, who attended the Blue School and who still has family in Wells, set the course record at last year's event.
The three-mile event was won by Andrew Hussey, while the first female home was Rebecca Carver.
Other winners included Carol Buckland and Alexander Wall in the 10km race, and Kerry Mathurine and David Solway in the three-mile event.
