Built in 1992 to promote "prosperity, peace and goodwill between the peoples of Europe" and to "foster cultural exchanges between young people," the amphitheatre includes 12 gigantic stones, one from each of the EU member countries at the time.

From rock operas to juggling conventions, professional companies such as Kneehigh Theatre to Frome's own choirs and orchestras, ECOS has proved to be a wonderful venue and symbol for the town.

To commemorate 21 years, a plaque is to be unveiled illustrating the stones and their history, explaining the process that led to the construction of the amphitheatre.

An exhibition about ECOS will also be held in the Merlin Theatre foyer curated by the artist behind the ECOS project, Barry Cooper.

A show featuring extracts from previous productions, plus new material, is planned under the direction of Mike Walker and Claudia Pepler, who directed and starred in the first productions on ECOS.

The unveiling will be a free event, so everyone is invited, but especially anyone involved in ECOS in any way.

Those with memorabilia or who wish to take part in the event should email Ms Pepler at claudia@merlintheatre.co.uk.
