Frome is the latest Somerset Library to move to self-service, following its successful introduction in Taunton, Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater.

The touch-screen kiosks will allow customers to borrow, renew and return books and other items, as well as to check reservations and pay charges.

Cabinet member responsible for libraries, David Hall, said: "Self-service has gone well in other libraries and I'm sure it will be the same for Frome.

"There will be staff on hand to help people get to grips with the new machines and how they work. Once they are up and running they will allow staff to focus on helping visitors get the most out of their library."

Library users need to bring their membership card and PIN (personal identification number) to use the kiosks. Anyone who does not have a PIN, has forgotten it or wants to change it to something more memorable, can ask a member of library staff or speak to a customer advisor on 0845 345 9177.

While the library is closed, there will be a limited service available in the upstairs library meeting room from Tuesday, February 26 to Monday, March 25, offering a small lending collection for adults and children and four public access computers with internet from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5pm, and Saturday, 9.30am to 4pm.

Access to the temporary library is via the side door and stairs on the river side of the building. Due to the location of the building works there will be no access to the lift.

The Frome Town Council information desk will be located at Palmer Street while the refurbishment takes place and the Mendip District Council information point will be based at Somerset County Council's offices on Christchurch Street West.
