Frome Golf Club's A team retain Avalon League title
The men's A team at Frome Golf Club retained the Avalon League Division 1 title after a fantastic season.
Having won the competition for the first time in the club's history last season, a repeat success always looked like a difficult task but Frome got off to a great start.
Home and away matches against newly-promoted Long Sutton produced 3-2 victories, while Oake Manor were comfortable dispatched 4.5-0.5.
However, a 3-2 defeat at Stockwood Vale and 2.5-2.5 draw at title favourites Taunton & Pickeridge left plenty still to do.
Frome won the return match against Taunton 4-1 and repeated that scoreline at home to Stockwood Vale.
That left the team needing to pick up four points from their final match at Oake Manor to secure the title.
This looked a tough task after two games but the third match produced a 6&5 victory and the fourth was halved as Frome finished with a 2.5-2.5draw to retain their title.
The league was won with the use of just 13 players, with team captain Andy Martin joined by Tom Black, Tom Chapman, Liam Copp, Pete Clark, Rich Allen, Mark Annable, Dani Annable, Myles Carpenter, Jamie Phillips, Harry Phillips, James Rutt and Trevor Atkinson.
Martin thanked club members and B-team captain Dave Galvin for their support, along with Centaur Services Ltd for sponsoring the team again.
Frome's success was not limited to the Avalon League as the club went on to win the Trounson Trophy, an inter- club handicap competition, with the winners decided by the lowest scores returned from three of the four players.
Jamie Phillips also won the President's Trophy for the lowest nett score of the competition.
Frome will hope to add to their memorable season when they play in the Champion of Champions competition.
