Friendly welcome and some great memories
MY brother, sister and myself have enjoyed a really good day out at the open day at the British Legion Club in Meriton Street, and wish to congratulate all the people that worked so hard to make it such an interesting time for all of us who had memories of this area.
Mum was born in Lewis Street (the Hopkins's) in 1908,and her father's family all lived in that area for many years. Lewis Street, Meriton Street, Kingsfield Road and John Street.
We knew it was a very poor area then, but the warmth of the community shone through. Everyone helped one another. This was shown by all the people who attended the open day.
They were all so friendly and had some tales to tell of their family life.

The open top bus tour as well was full of information. The photos on display were great showing the area from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Well done to the organisers and past residents for such a super day out.
What a pity all this has gone now. Many people now don't even know who their neighbours are or speak to them.
