Frefighters abandon picket line for rescue
Fire service bosses have praised striking firefighters for leaving their picket line early to respond to an emergency call. Avon Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call about 15 minutes before the strike was due to end on Friday. Assistant chief fire officer Mike Dixon said a caller had reported the possibility of people trapped in a burning building in Weston-super-Mare. He said when firefighters were told of the incident they returned to work. Mr Dixon said: "I think that shows the dedication of our staff have and passion they have for their jobs."
