A Ford Fiesta has achieved more than 108mpg in real-world road conditions as part of an annual eco-driving challenge.

The 1.6 TDCi diesel Econetic Fiesta, piloted by former rally stars Andy Dawson and Andrew Marriott, completed the ALD Automotive/Shell FuelSave MPG Marathon's 370-mile course having used just 3.4 gallons of fuel, clocking up an average of 108.78mpg on the varied and challenging route through the hills of South Wales and the Cotswolds.

The course was made more difficult by heavy rain, a collapsed bridge and a traffic light failure along the way, the latter two forcing the 20 competing cars to find unscheduled diversions.

Second place in the outright fuel economy category of the fuel-saving contest went to a Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi, which, at 102.21mpg and having finished the course before the Fiesta, was the first car in the event's history to break the 100mpg barrier.
