Flower festival with musical theme
MUSIC in Bloom, a celebration of music through flowers, is the theme for this year's flower festival in St Giles church, Leigh on Mendip.
The magnificent 15th century church towers above the village and has been the centre of many celebrations in times gone by.
The festival spans the August Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday to Monday and will be open each day between 11am and 4pm.
On Sunday there will be a Songs of Praise and cheese and wine social event in the evening starting at 6pm – tickets from Caroline Harris on 01373 812889.
To accompany the festival there will be an extensive historical display focusing on the impact of the First World War on the village and showcasing life in Leigh on Mendip between 1890 and the early 1930s, with a rare opportunity to view the Parish registers.
The exhibition together with home-made refreshments will be open to visitors each day from 11am to 4.30pm, in the Memorial Hall, close to the church.
The start of the festival will be marked by the local bell ringers who will ring a quarter peal from 10am on Saturday.
