Financial crisis is a poor excuse
LIKE Stephen Farthing (Post 12.8.13) I was dismayed at the High Court ruling against ten families protesting against the Bedroom Tax. The families had argued that, for people with disabilities, their 'spare' bedrooms were not really spare but were needed to store life-saving equipment or because their husbands or wives who cared for them needed a separate bedroom for the much needed respite of a good night's sleep.
However, I disagree with Mr Farthing about the cause of our financial situation - the global financial crisis was just that, GLOBAL. And caused by greedy bankers across the world. Until this global crisis, Labour was running the economy in surplus, not deficit. This is in contrast to the Tory governments of most of the 1980s, 1990s and currently, who persistently run the country in economic deficit. Whilst in government, Labour did spend money - on replacing schools that were falling apart after years of neglect, on rebuilding the NHS to the point where patient satisfaction was at an all-time high and on helping families out of poverty and providing high-quality child-care at excellent Sure Start Centres. I do not call that mishandling the nation's finances, I call it investing in our children's futures. And I do not believe it's OK for the current government to treat disabled and other people badly and use the financial crisis as a justification - the bankers should pay.
