Captain Phillips (12A) is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the US container ship, Maersk Alabama, by a crew of Somali pirates.
It is – through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens – simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalisation.
The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage.

Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship.
In the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
Captain Phillips opens at Wells Film Centre this week.
Also showing at Wells this week is the Irving welsh adaptation Filth (18).
Scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal.
As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control.
From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, Turbo (U) is coming to Wells in 2D and 3D.
It is a high-velocity comedy about a snail who dares to dream big – and fast.
After a freak accident infuses him with the power of super-speed, Turbo kicks into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the seemingly impossible: competing in the world's fastest race, the Indianapolis 500.
With the help of his tricked-out streetwise snail crew, this ultimate underdog puts his heart and shell on the line to prove that no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.
