Fat drivers more likely to die in a car crash
Overweight drivers are more likely to die in crashes as they are propelled forward, scientists have found.
Extra soft tissue prevents a seat belt from tightening immediately against the pelvis and experts believe car design may have to change.
Analysis of US collision data found those who were most overweight – in the World Health Organisation obesity category III – were 80 per cent more likely to die than drivers of a healthy weight.
The authors, from the University of California and the University of West Virginia analysed more than analysis of more than 3,403 pairs of drivers.
