The family of a torchbearer who set up a charity after her mother committed suicide shed tears and embraced as they watched her carry the Olympic flame in Yeovil.

Amy Meadows, 38, of Poole, was picked to carry the torch for her work with the Judi Meadows Memorial Fund which she set up in memory of her mother who took her own life in 2009 following a short, intense period of depression. She had been suffering from tinnitus as a side effect of anti-depressant medication.

Mrs Meadow’s dad Roger Meadows, 63, of West Sussex, said there were a few tears as the family watched her pass with the torch.

He said: “I’m very proud, and her mum would have been proud. If it wasn’t for her mum going she wouldn’t be here at all, so it’s a mixed feeling.”

Mrs Meadow’s grandmother Peggy Meadows, 93, of Hampshire, said the day had been emotional but exciting.

Friend Ciaran Henderson, 38, of London, who nominated Amy, said: “She’s done some amazing work. It was an admirable way to cope with suicide.”

Mrs Meadows was also cheered on by husband Michael Riley, 38, and children Freddy, seven, and Rosy, five.
