'Every Little Helps' is the motto of giant supermarket Tesco and it appears that every little Facebook comment helps too.

A Wells man was sacked by the major supermarket after posting a comment on his private page on the social networking website about his bosses; without stating at any time where he worked.

The 22-year-old, who has asked not to be named, also has other part-time work which he could have been referring to.

Yet he was hauled into the office at the Wells and suspended, after being told the comment he made less than 24 hours earlier, which included a four-letter "highly offensive" swear word, amounted to gross misconduct.

A week later, he has been given the sack.

The case comes after an unknown female worker hit the national headlines after she was given the sack by her boss via Facebook, after she left a message on her profile calling him "pervy".

She lost her job because she was still within her trial period.

But the Wells' Tesco employee had been working at the store for three years.

"At no time anywhere on Facebook or anywhere else on the internet had I ever said I worked at Tesco," he said.

"My occupation on my status is that of a baker, it doesn't mention that I work in a supermarket. I also have other part-time work and other commitments so I could have been talking about that.

"After a bad day last week, I posted the message on my private profile that I had decided to quit my job and made the comment about the managers. Only 'friends' who I had allowed could access my private profile and therefore could read this, it wasn't public to everyone.

"Halfway through the next day I was called up to the office upstairs and was told the comment amounted to misconduct and I was being suspended, pending an investigation.

"Someone who I worked with, who I had allowed access to my page as a 'friend' on Facebook, has passed the message onto my bosses.

"Apparently I can't say what's on my mind, in private, without being afraid of the repercussions. I've also restricted my 'friends' now so that I'm no longer in contact with anyone I worked with at Tesco."

The 22-year-old was informed he was being given the sack this week, but he still believes the company is in the wrong.

"As far as I'm concerned I've been given the sack for little more than gossip; therefore I will be looking at taking the case to tribunal," he said.

A spokesman for Tesco confirmed that a member of staff has been sacked, following an investigation, for posting a "highly offensive message" about other members of staff on a social networking website.

"Quite frankly I am genuinely amazed that anyone would think this man was being badly treated after going on a public website and calling his managers such a name," said the spokesman.

"I don't know about his other part-time jobs but enough was said that all the staff who saw this comment were in no doubt that he was referring to his managers at Tesco.

"Enough of them were shocked to go into work the next day and make the management aware of what had been said."
