Controversial plans to create an 840-place primary school in Portishead look likely to be given the go-ahead.

North Somerset Council announced earlier this year it had launched discussions with governors at High Down Infant and Junior Schools about the possibility of expanding each to provide an additional 210 places.

The move would see both expand to 420-place all-through schools from reception to Year 6 – meaning 840 students will be based on the shared site at Down Road.

North Somerset Council executive member for children and young people’s services Councillor Jeremy Blatchford has backed the move. He said: “This is the best available option to solve the crisis with school places in Portishead.”

The nursery on the High Down Infants site, which cares for over 80 pre-school age children, would be unaffected. There are 270 students at the infant school and 360 at the junior school. A consultation paper is now being prepared and parents will be invited to have their say.

A series of consultation meetings are planned. Portishead has a population of 22,000 but is due to soar to 30,000 by the time all the developments in the town are complete.
