'Excellence' at growing show
CROWDS of thousands flocked to Clevedon for the town's 114th annual summer flower show.
This year the event, at the Salthouse Fields, attracted 4,000 visitors – an increase on last year.
And there was plenty to see as 209 exhibitors weighed down the tables in the large marquees with a total of 1,195 exhibits, ranging from floral art to vegetables and homemade preserves.
Judges said the standard of exhibits this year was excellent, despite the recent difficult growing conditions.
Talented entrants wowed judges in a range of categories, although this year the children's section, photography and home economics were particularly well supported.
Greenfingered Mark Perry impressed the judges with his display of vegetables including carrots, potatoes, leeks and cauliflowers and was presented with the Avalon Trophy.
He was also presented with the ASG Protection Services trophy for the best exhibit from all classes in the show and collected the Clerical Medical trophy for the best exhibit in the horticultural classes.
Also celebrating was Angela Haberfield, who won the MA Robinson tankard for the best flower exhibit in the show by a resident living in Clevedon.
The flower show was launched in style on Saturday with a parade by the Long Eaton Militares band, which marched and played from Queens Square to the flower show field.
The parade was led by Julia Elton in a vintage car, who declared the show officially open.
As well as the packed marquees, visitors to the event enjoyed plenty of other attractions over the weekend including music from the Counterfeit Bee Gees and The Twurzels.
On Sunday, the start of the second day was signalled by a parade by the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldier Band from the pier to the show field.
Visitors enjoyed a sheepdog display plus music from the Merseybeat Legends and a jazz band and there were children's sports, a dog show and a display of classic cars
Show secretary Sue Law said: "It was a great show and everyone who visited us thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
"I would like to thank all our helpers because without their support we wouldn't be able to put this annual event on."
