One of the biggest traditions at Christmas is having all your loved ones around the table for what is the most celebrated meal of the year; Christmas dinner.

But while everyone enjoys the festive feast, the responsibility of preparing is not always as welcome, so why not forget about all the preparation this year and book a table somewhere everyone can enjoy. It might seem a long way off but planning your Christmas celebrations now will not only afford you the time to enjoy the festive period when it arrives, but also ensure you secure the perfect venue, restaurant or pub for yourself, family and friends.

Leave it too late and places will either be booked up entirely or at best have a restricted number of seats available.

When choosing the venue for your Christmas outing take into consideration the type of atmosphere you are after as well as the menu and it's always advisable to visit the venue as opposed to relying solely on word of mouth.

If you have a work lunch coming up or are planning on taking the family out one evening, why not give you restaurant a trial run? You will be able to assess the quality of service, the portion sizes and of course how tasty the grub is before you make your final decision.

If you are planning a meal for a work party or Christmas reunion with old friends, take into consideration that this will be less formal and ensure that the restaurant knows the nature of your party as well as the exact number of guests.

You don't want to be the loud group disrupting other diners when you could be eating elsewhere in a livelier atmosphere that better suits your party.

Alternatively if you have a smaller group then a more intimate restaurant will provide a relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy each other's company without the hustle and bustle of some larger venues.

Seeing as the children will be home from school for the Christmas period you should find that many restaurants and pubs will be happy to cater for younger eaters but always check if they have the appropriate facilities. As well as highchairs and baby changing facilities you might wish to enquire if there is a secure play area and a children's menu available.

Whatever the size or nature of your Christmas dinner remember that pubs and restaurants offering special menus and prices for larger parties will be taking bookings now, so reserve your table soon and don't miss out.
